A Guy Ranked The Best Parts About Being Sick But He Missed A Few Major Things
I saw this on the bird and thought here would be a good place to weigh in. Dan brings up some great points here, although he leaves a few out.
Let's start with the good.
Dan's list has 3 sure fire good things about being sick. Losing weight, Gatorades, and naps. He has them out of order. Sick naps are by far the best. You wake up from a sick nap you think you are on Mars. Also you have zero blowback from anyone about it. In fact, it's encouraged. As a kid when you were sick, your parents said get some rest. In college your roommates kept it quiet knowing you needed naps. As an adult, your spouse blocks off a room and lets you sleep all day. Naps are without a doubt a positive about being sick. And it's the best positive.
Gatorade is obviously a positive. I'm under the strong opinion that all drinks should be cold. I drink Gatorade in the morning on freezing cold days, doesn't matter. No one in my opinion has ever said "I'm really thirsty and wanted to have a hot drink sipped little by little and said "this is it." (Aside from Stella Blue Coffee). Gatorades when sick are terrific. Citrus Cooler is the best flavor and needs to be more readily available to the public.
Losing weight is nice too. 100% a positive. You can feel yourself dropping the pounds when you wake up sweaty after a nap. All the sickness toxins are dropping minute by minute. It's a nice little bump to come out of a 6 day sickness spell wearing a 32 or 33 waist instead of a 34.
Now, here are a few Dan forgot:
1- Long hot showers
Being sick sucks balls for the most part, but one small positive is after crawling out of bed in oversized sweatpants after naps is trying to wash out the toxins with hot hot water for as long as possible. A sick shower seems to hit a little different. You get out and feel way better. If you're really feeling shitty you sit down for a few minutes and let the steaming hot water run down on your head.
2- Watching programs
Another positive is sitting in bed all day and catching up with some programs to catch up on. My senior year of college I was sick as a dog. Went to class because it was the beginning of the semester and wanted to save my skips, and my friends said I looked like a dead body when I showed up. The rest of the week I spent in bed, or when I could muster the strength in the shower, which was a fun time because the dump we lived in off campus had running hot water for about 14 minutes total. So by the time I was actually feeling good you heard a little tick it meant the water was done and you got blasted with cold water. Awful.
But back to the programs. As I spent that week in bed, I decided what better way to spend it than starting a new show? So I started The Sopranos. I'll remind you that HBO Max didn't exist back then since this was the hard days of streaming. I had to find illegal websites and watch it. Sometimes they wouldn't have the episode you needed and you would have to find another website. Sometimes the links on there didn't work. It was a war. There were pop ups. One website had time limits on how long you could watch, so I had to open different broswers and fast forward to the spot I left off. Madness. Kids today don't realize how good they have it.
Nonetheless, no one powered through a series as fast as I did that week. Up all the time, sick as a dog just hammering episodes of Sopranos left and right. I know I would have watched it at some point in my life, but I don't think I could have done it that quickly if I wasn't sick back then.
Obvious point to address. ... The Price is Right is a staple when sick if you aren't going to binge a new show etc.
3- Being taken care of
This one plays a lot more when you were younger but nothing was better than Mom brining in a ginger ale, crackers and a hot towel to lay on your head. Always checking in to make sure you're okay, or if you need anything etc. As Adam Sandler once sang, " I'll get your medicine when your tummy aches." Big time Mom superhero vibes when they took care of you as a kid. Big Time.
That's the big 3 for me, I'm sure there's a few I forgot but for my money that's the positives of being sick.
