In Honor Of The Kentucky Derby ... Here's Jersey Jerry's Favorite Clip Of My Old Radio Calls ... Also- Post Positions For The Derby
Jersey Jerry usually laughs with me, but like many others at this company laughs way harder at me. It's par for the course. And to my credit I have been able to laugh at myself way more than I used to. Early on this clip would have never seen the light of day. A man can change. Anyway, I have always loved the Kentucky Derby. Maybe it was the fact that it fell on the same day as Holy Communion parties growing up and I remember my uncles yelling for someone to get off or on the rail, as well as various other unholy comments while trying to win a bet, maybe it's that it always fell on what felt like the beginning of consistent nice weather for the year, or maybe it's just one of those awesome events that everyone from grandma to the mailman can tune in for 2 minutes and know exactly what's going on. A bunch of horses will line up, and it's a race for who goes the fastest. Simple and awesome. But whatever the reason, I just love the Derby. LOVE it.
But like Big Mike says I was not a horse guy (that call was in 2016 for the record). I didn't break down the book like Dave and his dad did, I couldn't make sense of the past results etc. Rather I picked the horses by name and color (RIP my grandma, she loved the Greys as well). We would have a yearly family trip to Saratoga in the summer in the picnic area, and I went to a benefit a few times for a family friend at Monmouth. I do feel that over the years I've at least learned enough to call it a post position instead of a poll position but Jersey Jerry still laughs at this clip all the time.
Luckily, Jerry and I (thanks to Dave) have had the opportunity to have some laughs and sweat out some bets together at the track the last couple of years.
and best of all I got to see Idina Menzel sing live ... (shoutout Buddha Ben the biggest Rent fan I know)
Anyway, it is Derby week, and we'll have Elio on Picks Central Friday to give us a winner (hopefully), but here's the POST positions for Saturday's 151st running of the Kentucky Derby.
I'm all over the 20 - Owen Almighty because of the name and what it means to my family, but again .. I'm not a horse guy. So your guess is as good as mine.
Best of luck to all
