When It's Your Week: Jhonattan Vegas Drills A Rake With A Tee Shot, Bounces To The Middle Of The Green And Has The Clubhouse Lead

Sometimes you got weird shit happening and you can just see every break coming your way. That's how it felt for Jhonattan Vegas up until he got the 18th hole. Dude is hitting tee shots off a rake to the dead center of the green. Get out of 17 with a par and then took a double at 18. Can't really be surprised, 18 is kicking everyone's ass today. Honestly, hope Sunday is set up similar. Give me carnage on 18 with the pin position and people getting stuck falling off the front of the green. It's a delight to watch.

Vegas seems to be in a good spot to be leading again after round 2. Alex Smalley is two shots back with the back 9 left to play. Ryan Gerard just teed off and is three back. Feels like Vegas should be in the lead, or at least tied for the lead for the second straight round. That said, we can't have a Jhonattan Vegas wire-to-wire, right? I know the PGA always felt like the surprise winner but since Jimmy Walker in 2016. Every other winner has been a big name, I know Phil was 52 at Kiawah, but it's still Phil.

Either way, Vegas is playing out of his mind. He's won a few times on the Tour, but never has finished top-20 in a major. Now here he is sitting at -8 through two rounds. Say what you want about the course, he's showing up and playing. Bullshit to hit the rake and get that break though. I say that because I've never once had a good break off a rake. I hit that rake and it's somehow finding water no matter if it's on the opposite side of the course. This has the feel of some good juju OR if you want to find the negative, it's Vegas using all of his good juju up by Friday.
