Decent Day: Harris English Made An Extra $1.34 Million Thanks To A Birdie On 18 Yesterday, Then Watching A Bunch Of Guys Collapse Late
I know Scottie won the PGA Championship and deserves all the talk. But, look at Harris English here. Dude went out on Sunday, shot a 65 and now put himself in position for exemptions, Ryder Cup and a decent payday. That tied for 2nd had him jump 5 spots in the Ryder Cup standings, up to 7th and 1 spot out of the top-6 lock. He has this putt to thank for it all
That got him to -6. Then it was guys collapsing late that did the rest for him. Jon Rahm collapsed down the stretch, Bryson and JT Poston both bogeyed 18. That put Harris English in this spot. A tied for 2nd and an extra $1.34 million on his check. Actually, the real winner is probably his caddie. That's a massive increase on his check and what caddies typically get paid. This is why Nate is 100% correct with this take:
Obvious things got weird with ties yesterday, but think about that putt English made. If he misses that and ties for 5th he's looking at a payout around $617k. That's a MASSIVE difference. We know these guys make a ton of money, we know there's more money than ever in golf. But Nate is right, we should see the live swings and how much money is truly at play for a 12-foot putt on 18. I think this is even more true when you get a guy like Scottie running away with the Tournament the last 5 holes or so and need to see what else is at play.
Hard to argue with that payday on a Sunday though. Post a 65, birdie 18, watch guys collapse late and make $1.42 million. Not bad at all.
