The Rock's Next Movie Role Is The PERFECT Fit For What He Has Become

After working with A24 on The Smashing Machine, the anticipated MMA drama out later this year, Dwayne Johnson is looking to get back in business with the studio. Sources tell Deadline that he’s come aboard to co-star in Breakthrough, a psychological thriller penned by up-and-comer Zeke Goodman.

Set in turn-of-the-millennium Southern California, the story follows an alienated young man who comes under the influence of a motivational guru, whose intoxicating charm masks his morally questionable methods of manipulation and his own concealed darkness. We’re told Johnson will play the supporting role of the guru, with casting still underway for the lead role and other supporting parts

I think the Rock is in an interesting spot. As of right now, he is many things. Arguably the biggest name in entertainment. One of the richest men in his industry. He's got power, fame and wealth that his contemporaries dream of. One thing he doesn't have, however, is respect as an actor. And make no mistake, he can act! But he is an entertainer first, which you can see stamped on every big budget slop fest he stars in. Meanwhile, not as successful peers from wrestling that have taking their talents to Hollywood are getting lauded with praise, specifically John Cena and Dave Bautista. So, how do you fix that? Try making some movies that aren't shot on a green screen in an Atlanta backlot. The first shot at that seems to be 'THE SMASHING MACHINE', an A24 biopic on MMA fighter Mark Kerr.

I this looks damn good! It's one of the first times I've seen The Rock on screen NOT as The Rock, but as a character he's playing. And now we have his follow up potentially locked in 'Breakthrough'. Based on the description of the movie, I'm actually excited to see the opposite of what I wanted out of 'The Smashing Machine'. Instead of a transformation, we need The Rock to be The Rock here. Charismatic superstar that can convince people he is the gold standard. He's perfect guy for the job.

I don't know anything about the writer of this movie, but this has the potential to be something great. Maybe a better version of 'The Shrink Next Door' or something.
