'I'VE NEVER SEEN SCENES LIKE IT' - Sunderland's Last Minute Goal In The 'Richest Game In Soccer' Is Why There's Nothing Better Than Promotion/Relegation
I know everyone is probably enjoying Memorial Day Weekend, but no one is having a better day than 19-year old Tom Watson from Sunderland. You come in, hit the game-winner in the last two minutes of the richest game in soccer, you solidify yourself as a legend. You send Sunderland back to the Premier League after an 8-year absence and you become a Sunderland legend. That goal gave Sunderland promotion and roughly $300 million, hence the name.
There's nothing like promotion/relegation. It's what makes soccer awesome and why there always feels like there's something to play for. You get this game at Wembley every year and it always delivers. Not to mention Watson is leaving to join Brighton for next season.
Doesn't matter, he sent Sunderland to the Premier League. He's the one fans will be talking about forever because of that goal.
Oh and we get the Newcastle/Sunderland rivalry in the Premier League again? That's going to be awesome to watch as someone who has no ties to either club. That's just one of those matches you want to throw on at about 10 in the morning and watch the hate flow. So shout out Sunderland, if you haven't watched it yet you should check out the Sunderland til I die documentary, it gives a pretty good look into the misery of the club and trying to get back to this moment. Ridiculous run over the last few weeks too:
I still can't imagine sweating out a promotion/relegation scenario. Wondering if you get to be in the big leagues. Wondering if you are getting demoted. We don't have anything like that. Sure, selection shows are great. Sure, playoffs are great. But this is an entire different scenario that we can't relate to in American sports. I'd love one season of promotion/relegation just to see it. So shout out Sunderland and all their fans for finally making it back.
