What's Tougher: Getting A Hit In The MLB Or Scoring A Goal In The NHL?

I asked this question on Twitter yesterday, and honestly, I was surprised by the responses. Look, I get it, both feats are damn near impossible for the average man. Whether it's getting a hit in Major League Baseball or scoring a goal in an NHL game, you're basically fucked either way.

But if one had to happen, I genuinely believe getting a hit in the MLB is more likely.

Yes, I know pitchers are throwing absolute heat. I’d probably shit myself if I had to stand in against 100 mph coming off the bump. But here's the thing, over time, I think I’d get more comfortable seeing my life flash before my eyes. Maybe not comfortable enough to hit a line drive, but maybe enough to make contact. A dribbler? A lucky bloop? A bunt? There's some path.

Now, let’s talk about hockey. You can’t even attempt to score in an NHL game if you don’t know how to skate. That’s the first major problem. Picture the average guy trying to skate past the blue line, he's got no chance of making it down there. And if he does there’s no chance he’s going to get in a good position to score. Add in the chaos and physicality of the game, and now you’re really fucked. Even if you camp out by the crease, hoping for a lucky redirect, you’re going to get hacked, checked, and probably knocked flat on your ass. You don’t have the balance, awareness, or ability to react to any of it. Oh, and I almost forgot, there’s an elite goalie in net.

Good luck.

Honestly, I’d argue that scoring off a redirect in hockey is harder than laying down a bunt and beating it out for a base hit.

To be real though if you gave the average dude 100 tries at both, he’s going 0-for-100 across the board.

But if you gave that same guy unlimited tries? I think there’s a path, however narrow, for him to eventually put a ball in play and sneak onto first base. Skating, handling a puck, and beating an NHL goalie? Not a chance in hell. MLB is still a long shot, but it’s the more believable one.
