By the Numbers, Tonight's Rockies-Marlins Game May Be the Worst in MLB History

Tonight, the 10-50 Colorado Rockies will take on the 23-35 Miami Marlins in the second of a three-game set which very well may be the worst game in MLB history. At least as far as Big T Stats and Research can find, there has never been a Major League Baseball game in which the two teams have a combined winning percentage lower than tonight's .279 — with a minimum of 100 combined games — and the two starting pitchers have a combined ERA over 12.50.

We will witness history at LoanDepot Park tonight.

Well, some may witness it. There were at least several dozen people at the ballpark lat night to see the Rockies pick up their elusive 10th win. I don't know exactly how much the crowds differ from a Monday to a Tuesday in Miami, but I'm going to guess it's not a ton.

When the 2024 White Sox played the other worst teams in baseball last season, even they had considerably better combined winning percentages than what we'll see tonight from Colorado and Miami. The Marlins' 23-35 looks great when compared to what will certainly be the worst team ever, but that's a 98-loss pace. And as evidenced by the fact they already lost the series opener to the Rockies at home, they, too, are a terrible baseball team.

Now throw in Sandy Alcantara's precipitous fall-off from a Cy Young winner in 2022 to one of the worst pitchers in baseball and we have what very well may be the worst professional baseball game anyone has ever seen.

Anybody can tune in for Dodgers-Yankees. It's the real seamheads that fire up MLBTV for Rockies-Marlins in front of a high school-sized crowd on a Tuesday night to watch a duel of futility we may never see again. How can you not be romantic about baseball?
