Wake Forest's Baseball Coach Was Caught on Camera Calling Tennessee's Andrew Fischer a Word You Definitely Can't Say Immediately Before Fischer Launched a Ball to Saturn
With Tennessee up 6-2 on Wake Forest in the fourth inning of the deciding game of the Knoxville Regional on Monday night, Andrew Fischer stepped to the plate looking to add to his SEC-leading 23 home runs. He walked behind the plate before getting in the batter's box and fired up the Lindsey Nelson Stadium crowd before settling in for his at-bat, at which point Wake head coach Tom Walter was caught on camera calling Fischer a word you certainly can't say.
That obviously would have become a story regardless of what happened with the at-bat, but some immediate justice was done just a few pitches later when Fischer sent a ball into outer space to all but put the game out of reach and end the Demon Deacons' season.
So now you have the issue of the loss as well as your coach going viral for saying a slur on national television. Not a great situation for athletic director John Currie — the same guy who tried to hire Greg Schiano at Tennessee, believe it or not. Currie and Walter released statements confirming the incident on Tuesday morning.
Walter seems to acknowledge that he said it, yet also says he doesn't remember saying it, which is an odd statement for a PR person to approve. I asked ChatGPT to write an apology for this particular incident and it came up with a much better one in about three seconds, but whatever. Just a tough day in Winston-Salem all around.
I think we can all agree we are happy the upstanding young men of the Tennessee Volunteers baseball program put the month of June on their backs.
