Sydney Sweeney Put on 30 lbs to Play Christy Martin and Says the All the Weight Went to Her Boobs and Butt

You can say what you will about Sydney Sweeney's talents as an actress. And I don't anyone's calling her the Meryl Streep of her generation. Or anybody else's. But we should at least give her credit for trying to actually become an actress. There's absolutely nothing stopping her from cashing in with more TV-MA content like Euphoria, then make what she can before her looks fade and she resorts to marrying the oldest, richest man she get her hooks into. Often referred to as the Catherine Zeta-Jone Plan, which has worked out well for her.
But Sweeney hasn't always taken the low-hanging fruit. She's pushed herself. Sure, Madame Web was a disaster. But she and everyone in it make no effort to pretend it wasn't awful, so score one for her. But she played the deadeyed, resting bitchfaced teen daughter in White Lotus. Did that RomCom with Glen Powell. Played a nun in a dark thriller. So kudos to her for spreading her wings and pushing herself when she really doesn't have to become stinking rich while her true talents - and I don't have to spell out for you what those are - are at their peak.
What we never could've expected from Sweeney is that she'd be so dedicated to her craft that she'd undergo one of those total body transformations in order to take on a role. That of pioneering boxer Christy Martin:
I mean, that's a bold move. And a smart one if, and only if, you want to be taken seriously as an actor. There's no faster way to gain respect in Hollywood than portraying a real life musician, playing a Holocaust survivor, or severely changing your looks in order to inhabit your role. The Academy eats that kind of commitment up. From Robert DeNiro transforming himself into older, fatter Jake LaMotta to Matthew McConaghey going skeletal in Dallas Buyer's Club, that is Oscar bait of the highest order. And nothing signals Hollywood you are to be taken seriously like an insanely attractive woman sacrificing her beauty for the sake of authenticity. Charlize Theron won a Best Actress for uglifying herself to play a real hooker-turned-serial killer in Monster. Margo Robbie got nominated for playing Tonya Harding.
And now Sydney Sweeney is going all method to play Christy Martin. But the twist is, she is so genetically perfect that she can't even gain weight without it making her look even better:
Source - Sydney Sweeney opened up in a new W Magazine cover story about her dramatic transformation into boxer Christy Martin for an upcoming biopic, saying that her “body was completely different” after months of intense training.
“I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,” Sweeney told the publication. “I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”
W also noted that the actor gained more than 30 pounds for the role.
“My body was completely different,” Sweeney said. “I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy!”
To repeat, Hollywood loves this move. But it's also filled with insecure, self-possessed narcissists with deep resentment toward anyone who's younger and prettier than they are, just like every other institution in our culture. And the last thing they want to hear from America's current It Girl is, "I stuffed my face for months trying to turn myself into a chunk. But all it did was go right to the places that make your husband find me even more desirable! Just my luck!" Which isn't going to go over well with an industry of desperate, rapidly aging former It Girls practicing intermittent fasting and trying to stockpile Ozempic while their looks fade by the day.
The whole situation with Sydney's body is just further proof that human biology, like life, isn't fair. In cases like hers, the rich just keep on getting richer.
