Big Week For People Who Want The Course To Destroy Golfers: Rory Shot An 81 During His Practice Round, Claims He Didn't Even Play Bad
We know all about Oakmont at this point. If you somehow don't, just know that you have the church pew bunkers, the deep rough and greens that are as fast as fast can be. If you don't want any of that, just look at Rory here who shot an 81 despite playing not that bad last week. Hey, at least he ended on two birdies though. I know we like to pretend pro golfers are relatable, which they really aren't, but that is. You play like shit, end strong and convince yourself the next 18 will be different.
This is the week though for us who want to watch the course ruin golfers. The US Open is supposed to be hard, it's supposed to be guys winning barely breaking par. Hell, even the golfers know it:
I will say I don't like Rory this week at all, just don't think he's going to play well at Oakmont. But, it's still Rory. If he's out here saying he shot an 81 and didn't play that bad we're going to see mayhem this week. It's all I want. I say it whenever I talk about golf in a season format, I want something different. People shooting -17 every week in a 72-hole stroke tournament gets stale. Give me the 81s and still making a cut somehow.
I'm also aware it's a practice round and weather changes from week-to-week. But I do love the thought process of Rory shooting an 81, coming off birdies on 17 and 18, going ah wasn't that bad, add up the numbers and realize you're fucked. That's something we've all been at before. Probably not even birdies to close, most likely a bogey-par or just pars, but you know that feeling.
