The Pride Of Shreveport: Sam Burns Had One Of The Best Rounds You'll Ever See At The US Open And The 3rd Lowest Score Ever At Oakmont
There's been a lot of talk about how hard Oakmont is and rightfully so. That's why this round by Sam Burns is one of the best we'll ever see. It's the third lowest US Open score on the course. He's gained over 9 strokes on the field. That's basically unheard of.
It's not that Sam Burns isn't a good player or anything like that, but if you told me who was going out there and shooting a 65 it's one of the horses. It's a Scottie or Rahm or someone like that. You can make a case that Burns is the best putter in the world and looked the part of it today but Oakmont is all about hitting fairways. It's about not getting penalized for going in the rough and having to hack it to wherever and hope to recover. That's how you end up with 6 birdies on a course that shouldn't be giving out 65s. There's a reason he's only one of 12 guys ever to shoot a 65 or better at Oakmont, Johnny Miller obviously having the 63.

Now this sets up the afternoon wave. J.J. Spaun just birdied 4 to retake the lead. We'll see what the course does in terms of firming up and playing a little bit tougher in the afternoon, but Burns is the one who set the number. The names to watch that are just teeing off would be Spaun, Thriston Lawrence, Ben Griffin and Si Woo Kim. One of those will be in the lead after 36 holes.
All I know is we just watched one of the best rounds you'll see at any US Open. Throw in the pin positions, how Oakmont is playing and the situation you can only agree with it. The pride of Shreveport baby.
