'I Just Need To Play Like Shit' - Shane Lowry's Plan To Win The Open (Again), Is To Be So Bad During Practice Rounds That He Has No Expectations
[Source] - “If I can keep my complacency away and my expectation down, that’s when I’m at my best,” he said Monday.
As for his mood this week?
“I’m feeling great the last two days, so that’s not great,” he said, laughing.
“No, honestly, I’ve had a great week,” he said. “I’ve had a great week of practice. I just need to play shit for the next couple of days, and I’ll be all right.”
I'm not going to sit here and say this plan isn't genius. The man won at Portrush the last time around, he's got a big ass mural leading into Portrush
All I'm saying is Shane Lowry might be onto something here. I actually agree with this when it comes to golf brain. The moment you think you have it all figured out and your game is clicking, you get lazy. You move that front foot in the wrong spot and all of a sudden you're spraying the ball. Or think about when you go to the range. Good range session? Every single person knows that means disaster. You wasted all the good shots. Bad range session? Might have your best round of the year.
For Lowry it's about just not overthinking and not becoming the guy who hated Quail Hollow. I don't blame him for hating Oakmont, if you blow a lead there at some point in your career and have to go back, you're allowed to hate it. Lowry also hasn't had a great major run here this year. He's been good, but at the majors has missed cuts and not been in contention. Now he comes back home, did the smart thing by playing a ton of links golf:
Should have played Tralee, which is the greatest course in the world. But he almost hit a reset, he got back to Ireland, played some courses that made him feel home and get used to the links style again. Now he's back where he won. Key is to play like shit and we'll see him right there in contention.
