Mike Williams, Who Signed Back With The Chargers In March, Has Decided To Retire
This is about as Chargers as it gets, folks. After suffering an entire year with one of the worst receiver corps ever put together, we get a nice little treat with the re-signing of Mike Williams in March. A banger signing? No. But a cool one that reunites Herbert with one of his favorite targets and gives the team an actually reliable outside receiver (reliable if he is actually on the field, that is). However, a couple of days ago, a wrench got thrown in those plans when the team announced he was starting off the year on the PUP list.
(CBS) The Los Angeles Chargers are already dealing with several injuries with training camp about to begin. Just days after it was announced that former Pro Bowl running back Najee Harris is dealing with a "superficial eye injury" after a fireworks accident, the Chargers placed five players on their physically unable to perform list, including receiver Mike Williams.
And now, instead of fighting through whatever injury he has to play in the Greg Roman offense, Williams has decided to retire. As much as I hate it, I can't blame him. He's brutally injured every other year and to fight through that at this age for a team that is not even close to a super bowl favorite is a big ask. It's also the most Chargers thing ever. The team is desperate for outside help, they get it with the cool extra of it being a reunion, and now they're right back in the hole.
So what's next for the Chargers? Tre Harris is the natural fit for the position but he is now holding out thanks to the Texan's idiocy. It can't be Quentin Johnston, obviously. KeAndre Lambert-Smith still needs work. As far as free agents go, Keenan Allen will stand out to fans but he is not an outside guy. Amari Cooper might be a good fit, maybe even Gabe Davis on the cheap (I blame his last year on the Jags). No matter how it shakes out, they need to do SOMETHING. I can't watch another year of running on two downs and then praying Ladd McConkey is open.
Regardless of how it shook out, I'll miss Mike Williams. He finishes his career 10th in franchise yards and 13th in touchdowns but he will be most remembered for being an incredible jump ball receiver. 50/50 balls are 80/20 balls for him which was a phenomenal tool for a young Herbert and an aging Phil.
