The List of Prospects Padres GM A.J. Preller Has Traded Over the Last Decade Is Certifiably Insane
The Padres made the most stunning move of the MLB trade deadline so far when San Diego shipped No. 3 prospect in baseball Leo De Vries to the Athletics for Mason Miller and J.P. Sears. Miller is a great closer under control for several more seasons, but if you had asked anyone around baseball what kind of player(s) the Padres could have gotten if they were willing to part with De Vries, the answers would have ben a lot more lucrative than what they ended up with.
But hey, these trades happen because some teams are going all in to win right now and they're willing to give up potentially great future assets to make that happen. I totally understand that.
The problem is, once you look at a list of prospects that Padres general manager A.J. Preller has traded away, you start to notice a bit of a disturbing trend.
Holy shit. I even generally lean more towards the side of giving up prospects unless they're absolutely can't-touch, guaranteed super stars because so many don't pan out, but this guy has given away a full roster of All-Stars. And that list doesn't even include Brent Rooker and Emmanuel Clase — Rooker wasn't a prospect when Preller got rid of him, but he turned into one of the best hitters in baseball, so he fits the list.
And again, if these trades landed guys that helped San Diego win a World Series or two, they'd all be worth it. But in Preller's 10 seasons, the Padres have made the playoffs three times and the NLCS once. All of this has been for basically nothing.
Based on the available evidence, Leo De Vries is going to be an absolute monster and the A's now have a pretty incredible young core. Maybe Miller will finally be the piece that makes all these trades worth something.
