NOT GOOD: Terry McLaurin Has Requested A Trade Out Of Washington
Not good!!!! Not good at all!!!!
Maybe it's part of the negotiations or maybe it's real and he legitimately wants out, it's hard to say right now. Many players "request a trade" during hold outs, and few players ever actually get traded. I mean Lamar is the most recent big example, and they got a new deal done no harm, no foul. So I'm not completely freaking out about this, but at the same time, it certainly isn't ideal.
Look, I see both sides. I get Terry wants one mega-contract. He feels he has earned it and deserves it. He's had 5 straight 1,000 yard seasons and is Jayden's top weapon. You don't want to slow down Jayden's progress by losing WR1. That would be absolutely brutal.
But I get Adam Peters being like hey man, you aren't Justin Jefferson and we can't pay you Justin Jefferson money. Is Terry a top 10-15 WR in the league? Certainly, and he should be paid as so. But he should not be paid $40 million a year, entering his 30 year old season. Every statistic and algorithm and formula will tell you that is a recipe for disaster. If he was 26, no brainer to give him the biggest of bags. But right now? You have to understand the hesitation.
Plus, Terry is currently under contract for $25 million! Is he really going to sit out and lose that? I doubt it.
Terry knows the offense needs him. Adam Peters knows Terry knows the offense needs him. But they both know he isn't going to sit out and lose out on his final season of his $25 million contract. And the team has said they aren't going to trade him. So now it's an old fashioned stand-off. And usually...well...the player doesn't sit out. So that makes me optimistic, but doesn't necessarily make me feel great either, considering all reports say both sides aren't even close to meeting in the middle.
I hope they meet at 3 years, $100 million. Slightly over market value, but whatever, pay for your guy. The guy who is big in the community, the locker room, on the field, everywhere. And don't fuck up Jayden's development in the mean time.
