Fantastic Four & The Naked Gun Are Both Very Enjoyable Summer Movies

It's already been a pretty decent summer with entertaining movies like Superman, Mission Impossible, 28 Years Later and Final Destination: Bloodlines in theaters. Even smaller movies like The Life Of Chuck and Dangerous Animals have been good. Now, we can add Fantastic Four and The Naked Gun to that list. I have reviews of both below along with the Pete Davidson horror The Home.

Fantastic Four is the best looking Marvel movie ever. It also has what most Marvel movies don’t: a bad guy worth a damn! The other great thing about this movie is you didn’t have to watch a single Marvel product on TV to understand what was going on. It was a totally unique world. Because of all of that, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit.

I liked these characters so much, I wanted to spend more time with them and the people around them. It’s a superhero movie where you want to see these people interacting with the world; not necessarily saving it the entire time.

This was very well casted and the production design gives this such a clean look. Matt Shakman deserves a lot of credit for finally making a good Fantastic Four movie. This is the best Marvel movie of the year and I say that having liked Thunderbolts.

Fantastic Four: B+

In a film landscape that is a desert for comedy, The Naked Gun is a much needed oasis. I laughed as much as any movie I’ve seen in the theaters since Jackass Forever. This is a perfect companion to The Naked Gun franchise and it’s the best one since the classic original. Liam Neeson is the perfect actor to replace Leslie Nielsen. Neeson’s comic timing and intensity is perfect.

In some ways, it’s hard to critique a movie like this. There is no real story or character development. Everything exists to make you laugh. But that also makes it really easy to critique this. It’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. It’s funny as fuck.

This is the second best comedy of the year (right behind Friendship) and had me laughing the entire time. The only thing that got the smile off my face after the movie was realizing that there isn’t another comedy in the movies for a long time.

The Naked Gun: B+

The Home is not a good movie but there are traces of something interesting here.  Having a nursing home with a talented supporting cast is a great setting for a horror movie. Pete Davidson is not nearly a talented enough actor to carry an entire horror movie on his own…but I bet there is an interesting supporting role for him somewhere.

I can’t come close to recommending this movie but it takes a big swing in the last 20 minutes that I respected. I appreciate a good tone switch and it kept this movie from being simply bad.

Finally, it’s crazy this movie found 1,000 screens in July with so many major movies out there. This looks and feels so cheap.
