The NFL Is Taking Jobs Away From Good, Honest Chain Gang Workers With Their New Virtual 1st Down Measurement System
We are living through a truly abysmal time economically speaking. If you want to go out and get some lunch, it's literally impossible to spend anything less than $20. You need a few things from the grocery store? Doesn't matter what you buy, you're still not getting out of there spending less than $70. Home prices are through the roof. Vegas is literally on life support right now because people don't have the money to blow there right now. The economy is so unbelievably fucked.
So what does the NFL--a $190 billion organization--go out and do?
Well they strip jobs away from The most common of American men as they come. Chain Gang workers all across the league have now been replaced by this virtual bullshit. Think about all those little kids who grow up wanting to work the chains in the NFL, and now their dream is dead. Think about all those guys who have dedicated their life to perfecting the craft of walking those down markers out there as quickly and accurately as possible. All for the NFL to turn their back on them and replace them with a fucking computer?
You'd expect that out of some shitty, failing company who is looking to cut costs by just hiring a bunch of foreigners to work virtually. But the NFL is an American staple. This country was built upon the backs of Chain Gang workers, and now we're just deserting them in the past. It sickens me.
Mostly because this new virtual measurement system doesn't even fix the actual problem that football has--which is that the refs are in charge of spotting the ball based on their eyes. The chains were never the issue. It's the fact that a ref can go spot the ball half a yard short just because they were too slow and lazy to see where it actually ended up. If you're going to go with the virtual technology, then there needs to be something inside the ball that tracks its exact spot. This new system is nothing more than just using the "yellow line" technology they already have for 1st downs on the broadcast.
Once you can accurately track the ball and no longer give refs the power to spot it themselves, then it'll be time for a change. But that time is not today. Get the Chain Gang back out there. Those fellas deserve the paycheck more than anybody on that field.
