All We Can Do Now Is Trust That Adam Peters Knows What He's Doing

I sent out that tweet last night and have been thinking a lot about how frustrating this entire Terry situation is as a fan of both the player and the team. Because on one hand Terry has given everything to this team and I want him to cash in and get paid. I always root for my favorite players to get big bags when they deserve it.

But then on the other hand, we have to see the bigger picture. You simply cannot pay Terry $40 million a year because of what he has already done. Yeah, you can sprinkle in some extra incentives and give him some perks or whatever, but you can't pay a guy coming into his 30 year old season (who still has a year left on his $25 million/year deal) top 5 WR money. That would be franchise malpractice. That would be some Dan Snyder shit. And if there's one thing we all can agree on is that we don't want to go back to those days. We don't want our owner barging into the GM's office telling him what to do. We have longed for this team to operate the way successful organizations operate, and it's not going to be all smooth roads. There will be bumps and headaches, and that's what we are unfortunately seeing now.

From what I can tell, the Commanders have almost all the leverage. For starters, Terry is still under contract and I do not see him sitting out the entire season and forfeiting $25 million. All of Terry's leverage comes from Jayden Daniels and having continuity in the offense. But Adam Peters might say "well they went 4-12 with Terry on the team with bad QBs, so maybe he isn't worth as many wins as he thinks he is".

To me, it seems like Terry's agent bit off a bit more than he can chew. It seems like he is asking for laughably too much money. Cortland Sutton just signed a 4 year, $92 million deal and while I think Terry is the better WR between the 2, he isn't $15 million+ a year better. My best guess is Terry's agent, whose name is Buddy Baker which is a name you would give a fictitious smarmy agent in a made for TV movie, walked into negotiations thinking he was some big swinging dick and was told to come back when he was serious. I think he has been feeding Terry some bad info and told him some tall tales about how much money he could get him. That all seems very apparent to me.

I think a deal gets done. This Buddy Baker fella is making it difficult, but I think a deal ultimately gets done. The Commanders have already told Terry they aren't going to trade him, which means either play for the $25 million you're under contract for, sign a reasonable extension, or sit out. Terry's side needs to realize there's a slotted amount in the market for a guy of Terry's age and production, and Adam Peters needs to possible pay him a little extra for putting up with the Dan Snyder era. My best offer would be 3 years, $100 million. It's a bit much but the cap always goes up and we have Jayden on a rookie deal, so there is a little extra money to spend. Let's just hope they get this done.
