Roger Goodell Stuffed Both Adam Silver And Rob Manfred In A Locker By Suggesting The NFL Isn't Competing With The NBA And MLB

I don't care what your favorite sport may be, I don't think anyone would ever suggest that the NFL isn't King. If there's one thing we're all addicted to, it's football. It doesn't matter if your favorite team is dogshit or competing for Super Bowls, you're watching every single game during the week and then all day Sunday. It's actually kind of amazing that regardless of the quality of the product on the field, we as fans will always come back for more. If that's not addiction, what is?
It's also true that no matter what new ideas the other major sports league may try, nobody is ever going to touch the NFL in terms of popularity or TV ratings. Everyone else is just playing for 2nd place at best, and that's not changing anytime soon. So it's not at all surprising to hear how Goodell views his league in the context of the other major three sports
Uhhhhhhh ya think?
Listen, I'm as pro-NBA as anyone on the planet, but even I couldn't with a straight face suggest that the NBA is "competing" with the NFL. No chance. Just look at the Christmas games, for example. You could make a legit case that the actual on the court product in terms of the NBA games was better than the on the field product in the NFL games. Did that matter? Of course not. From an eyeballs perspective, the NFL destroyed the NBA like you read about. That doesn't mean it was a better product, but it does mean when the NFL decides they want to have a game, they take over everything potentially standing in their way.
Even as the NBA continues to expand and grow its audience, it'll never make a legit dent when compared to the NFL. You don't see the NFL reworking their schedule to avoid the NBA, do you? Yet you do see that when it comes to the NBA. That pretty much tells you all you need to know. Now, I will say, where the NBA does have a leg up at the moment is the international market. Basketball is much more of a global game than football….for now. There's a reason the NFL is scheduling more and more international games, so my guess is that the gap starts to close over time.
It's a bit of a flex to suggest that your only real competition is Apple and Google, and even if my moron brain isn't totally sure what that even means, if anyone could take down those two giants, it's probably the NFL. If I'm being honest the only thing I really care about when it comes to the NFL right now is that they don't fuck up RedZone now that they purchased NFL Network or whatever. Here's to hoping there was language in that deal that forces ESPN not to change a goddamn thing. I'm not sure I could handle ESPN ruining both Inside The NBA and NFL RedZone at the same time. There's only so much as a sports fan that I can take, and that would simply be a step too far.
