A Professional Tennis Player On The ATP Tour Was Disqualified After Taking A 10 Second Shower During His Toilet Break, Despite Winning The First Set
Listen, I saw this and immediately thought that there's just no possible way that this has ever happened before. Surely a professional athlete knows the rules defined in their sport, especially regarding one that lets you take toilet breaks if you need to. For some context, this fella Mats Rosenkranz, who is ranked 358th in the world, went and took a quick shower that he says was only 10 seconds in between sets. On the tour, you're allowed a 3 minute toilet break that starts once you enter the bathroom, with an additional 2 minutes if you need to change clothes. Generally players do this to throw off some momentum, actually need to go to the bathroom, or just need a second to recollect their thoughts that isn't in the eye of the actual court surrounded by fans.
Well apparently showers are not allowed due to doping regulations, which my best guess is that they aren't following you into the shower so they can't see if you just start injecting some steroids into your butt or whatever would make you perform better? But are they doing that if you're in a stall taking a number 2 either? I know they send a supervisor with you and he probably heard the water turn on and was like "welp, you're disqualified buddy" which adds an even funnier twist to this. And not to mention the crazier part is that you're allowed to shower if you're at a best of 5 sets match at one of the Grand Slams but not one of these lowly tournaments that are still counting towards professional rank.
I'm no meteorologist but the real feel air temperature in Hersonissos, Greece, where this match was played, was 102 degrees today. It's hard to argue that he was doing anything else other than getting a cool breeze of water splashed on his body, especially when you consider the fact that he already won the first set and was firmly in the driver's seat. But rules are rules and instead the other lad got to advance to the next round.
Just another day in tennis.
