Nobody 2, Honey Don't & Freakier Friday Are Not Good Movies
This has been a really strong summer for movies. It feels like every week there is a good movie (or two) that has come out…until this one. I am reviewing four movies this week and I can't recommend a single one. Some are simply not made for me and others are just lousy. Below are reviews for Nobody 2, Freakier Friday, Honey Don't and KPop Demon Hunters.
Freakier Friday is like watching a sitcom you’d see on network TV but for 110 minutes. That’s neither a compliment nor an insult. This movie doesn’t really work for me but I understand that for people who want safe, predictable comedy with likable actors, this will work.
Entertainment is escapism. We all choose to escape in different ways. Some people want to be challenged and pushed in what they consume. Many more want something that is cheerfully watched with no real effort at all. I used to really hate movies like this but the older I get, the more I can understand them.
Life is hard. There is something charming about simplicity. This movie doesn’t do anything but try to make you smile. There is a teenager in the body of Jamie Lee Curtis! Lindsay Lohan has also switched with a teenager! That’s it. That’s the movie.
If that’s what you want from entertainment, this will deliver. Everyone here tries their best. If that’s not what you want, you’ll be bored. I was bored.

The Nobody film series is a great example of the law of diminishing returns. The first half of the first Nobody is by far the best. Each scene after that is worse than the next. By the time we get to the ending of this sequel, it is so painfully dumb, it’s a fun house reflection of the interesting reality the first movie opened with.
The cast all came back but the script keeps trying to find things for them to do. Sharon Stone appears in the second half and gives a fun performance that gives the film some much needed new blood.
This whole endeavor just feels so pointless. The first movie already was just a funnier version of the mild-mannered assassin that we’ve already seen many times before (never better than in A History Of Violence). A sequel just feels like they are shoving it down our throats.
Hopefully they don’t make a third Nobody movie. At this rate, it may be a truly terrible movie.

Honey Don’t wants to be a noir with a character that can do wrong. There’s a reason noir doesn’t work that way. It’s also wants to lecture the audience at times about religion and politics. It feels like a movie made by people who think they are very clever about social issues than maybe they actually are.
This is a mess with talented people like Margaret Qualley and Chris Evans each doing a good job but acting like they are in completely different movies. This took 20 years to write (no joke) and it never feels like it exists in a specific time. This could take place in the 1970's or 2020's and it would never feel quite right.
Despite its many flaws, this isn’t a terrible movie. There are flashes of something interesting here and some of the actors are very entertaining. I liked that it took place in Bakersfield, California (even though it was shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico). It made this feel unique.
Ethan Coen can obviously be a brilliant filmmaker but maybe he needs to make movies with his brother to be great.

KPop Demon Hunters is a tough one for me to review fairly. I don’t care about pop stars fighting demons and to be fair, I’m not the intended audience.
Having said all of that, this is a well made animated movie with good songs and a strong theme of not being able to hide from your past, but instead embrace it. I can understand why this is Netflix’s most streamed original movie ever.
I find the success of this movie more interesting than the movie itself. For the last decade, Disney has ignored the youngest generation as it makes live action remakes for easy nostalgia money from adults. It’s created a vacuum where there aren’t original musical cartoons for kids. This movie checks those boxes.
It’s well crafted with a $100 million budget and I bet kids are watching this over and over again. Netflix put this in theaters for one weekend and (even though they likely won’t report it), it’ll finish number 1. It’s in over a thousand screens so that’s why I saw it. I didn’t really enjoy it but that’s not the point.
