Chris Fowler Was Fighting For His Life In The Booth For Raiders/Chargers Last Night, Should Have Tapped In Brent Musburger As The Emergency Announcer
Brutal late night game, mostly because it just sucked. I don't know how else to describe it besides Khalil Mack's arm getting bent the wrong way and looking gross as hell being the biggest story out of it. Chargers look good, that's not really shocking though. Actually, maybe the biggest story is Quentin Johnston can now catch the ball? That seems like a major development for someone who was constantly called a bust.
But all I saw people talking about was 1) Tom Brady in the booth wearing a headset and 2) Chris Fowler in the fight for his life. It didn't even sound like Chris Fowler the entire game and I was stunned the moment they showed him as the guy on the call. The man needs sleep, cough drops, whatever because that was a brutal listen. I actually like Fowler a ton too, think he's great during college football games.
The real solution here was an obvious one.
Brent Musburger spent years as the play-by-play guy for the Raiders. No-brainer to bring him on the call, especially since we saw him recently:
I think we need an emergency starter for all announcers, nothing more than using Gus Johnson for the end of NCAA Tournament games when we're looking at a buzzer beater. He was always the voice of insane endings during the greatest event in the sport. It needs to be him, Harlan or Eagle late in games. Use Brent Musburger for the Raiders when Fowler is in a fight for his life. If an announcer isn't working out, have the guy in the bullpen ready to come on out. We have an emergency quarterback, should use that here too.
