Stay In College Forever: A 58-Year Old Guy Is Going Viral For Deciding To Try Out For A Division III Football Team And Made The Lycoming Roster
Shout out Tom Cillo and shout out Division III football. People don't understand how tough it is there:
Pretty absurd to put in 'quit high school for drugs' in the tweet, but you get the point. Guy was out there working for 33 years and finally said it's time. It's time to retire the 9-5 and live the dream. Be the 58-year old college freshman and grind your way to get snaps for Lycoming. You think you can just walk in and play against Moravian or Dickinson? I don't think so, especially not at 58.
Honestly, it's impressive. I wanted to make that too many guys are staying in college for the NIL paycheck and the ridiculousness of suing for more years.
But the guy is out here being athletic at 58. Credit to that. I said recently, you need to hang it up at some point. Tom Cillo is proving me wrong. I'm not saying you can't golf or play in a beer league for softball, but you can't be doing quick twitch moves. You absolutely can't be lining up in a 3-point stance and getting into the trenches. Not only that, but the dude is grinding apparently since he's not guaranteed spots.
[Source] - Coach Clark has a responsibility to put the best players on the field, but admires Cillo's determination and wants to see him succeed.
"He has a role. How it continues to develop in terms of playing time will be based off of performance, but he's he's a valuable member of our team," said Clark.
It's still to be determined if Tom will be taking snaps this year, but he's already making an impact with the team.
You know how much you gotta love the game to be sitting on the sidelines not guaranteed anything in Division III football? That's the most dedication I've ever seen. I get it's his dream and everything, but at least gotta be Rudy and get a big time spot. Then have all your teammates lay the jersey down so you can get to suit up for a game.
The point as always is stay in college as long as possible. College rules. I don't care what people say, college is great. You get 4 years of minimal rules and responsibilities. I know you can't stay longer than that in most cases, but at least enjoy the hell out of the 4 years. Learn to live off of $20 for a few weeks and how far that goes in a college town.
