Louisiana's Governor Said He'd Let Donald Trump Pick LSU's Next Football Coach Before Athletic Director Scott Woodward
I've said it 1,000 times before, but I just genuinely can't believe there are Americans going about their lives without following the sport of college football. Louisiana governor Jeff Landry — the actual, elected governor — said today he will not allow LSU athletic director Scott Woodward to hire the school's next football coach and that he'd rather have Donald Trump do it before he'd let Woodward. This is the best sport on Earth.
Landry, as the governor, is the head of LSU's Board of Supervisors — the entity which he says will be hiring the next coach rather than Woodward — so he has a larger role in this process than any other state's governor usually would. Still, it's incredible that one of 50 governors is at a press conference trashing the LSU athletic director and saying his people will be taking care of the football program.
Woodward is responsible for hiring Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M as well as Brian Kelly at LSU, both of whom now represent the two largest buyouts in college football history.
What Landry said about coaches and athletic directors having the same agents is actually a great point, though. For those constantly wondering how coaches get fired and then receive massive buyouts on their way out the door, look no further than the fact that all these guys are represented by the same five or six agents. So when you have a Jimmy Sexton client coach negotiating with a Jimmy Sexton client AD, who is there to step in and stop a massive buyout from being put into the deal? The AD isn't going to play hardball with his own agent, whom he will need negotiating on his behalf at some point, too.
That's why we need the big guns like Gov. Landry to step in and put a stop to this nonsense. Best of luck to the next LSU head coach, who will answer not only to one of the most ravenous fanbases in the country, but also all the way up to the governor's mansion.
