Hugh Freeze's Firing Was Broken by a Random Twitter User Who Noticed His Weekly Sunday Tee Time Had Been Canceled
There are thousands of people who make a good living covering college football as their actual job. And somehow, many of the biggest stories in the sport are still broken by message board posters and anonymous social media accounts because this is the greatest game in the world.
Pete Thamel reported that Auburn had fired Hugh Freeze at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. However, real investigative journalist and self-proclaimed Auburn insider @great_tweeter reported four hours earlier that something was afoot after noticing Freeze's apparently weekly tee time had been canceled. Sure enough, Hugh was out of a job shortly thereafter.
There are so many interesting layers to this. Most notably, was Freeze playing golf every Sunday during the season? Our No. 1 Auburn insider described it as a "standing" tee time and obviously knew it was supposed to be on the schedule, which would lead me to believe that could be the case. Also, the tee time was booked under Freeze's wife's name, which is particularly interesting due to some earlier golf drama Freeze had this summer.
Another message board poster noticed Freeze had played golf in 10 of the first 20 days of June through his public USGA scorecard. Freeze hasn't posted a score publicly to his GHIN since.

The great news for Freeze is he will get $15 million from Auburn University to not coach there anymore — not subject to any offset or mitigation — and he has as much time to play golf as he could ever want. Go hit the links hard before winter, Hugh.
