When the New York Mets were at their lowest point, new hope was forged in 1980 when they made Darryl Strawberry the first pick in the MLB Draft. Three years later, as the Mets began to turn things around, Darryl made his debut and won the National League Rookie of the Year. Over the next seven years, the Mets were among the best teams in baseball every season, with Darryl Strawberry becoming the Mets' all-time leading home run hitter.
The Mets retired Strawberry's number 18 in 2024, assuring his place as one of the greatest to ever wear their uniform. On Thursday, I walked with Darryl Strawberry, one of my all-time favorite players, reminiscing about his great Mets career, including memorable moments in the 1986 season.
